Screen Time vs Focus on iPhone: which should you use?

Compare iPhone app limits and Focus settings, and choose the right tool for the distraction you want to reduce.

Screen Time measures device activity and can set limits for apps or categories. Focus primarily controls interruptions, including which people and apps can send notifications. Many people benefit from using both.

Use Screen Time for an allowance

Choose App Limits (called Time Allowances in iOS 27 and later) when the problem is spending longer than intended in an app. A limit can cover several selected apps together. Downtime (or Schedules on iOS 27 and later) can restrict apps during a scheduled window, with its behavior depending on your settings.

Use Focus for interruptions

Choose a Work or Sleep Focus when notifications keep pulling you away. You can schedule a Focus and choose which notifications are allowed. Silencing notifications does not itself stop you from opening an app.

Use them together

For example, silence nonessential notifications during work with Focus, then set a daily app allowance for the time you do choose to browse. For an app centered on a visible daily stopping point, explore Until Red, coming soon for iPhone.
